Select the Shoes that Your Feet Want
Many people are troubled by foot problems for one main reason. Ill fitting shoes.
Blisters, neuromas and aching joints will all be alleviated by footwear that fits. Well fitting shoes should support the feet and how they function hence it is important to choose shoes that fit well.
Every day we take around 10,000 steps and our feet must hold the weight of our bodies and absorb the shock of each foot fall. When walking, each time our feet come into contact with the ground they must initially adapt to the surface that we are walking on. The foot then tightens and becomes tense in order to propel the body forward. There are just loads of shoes designed to repeatedly withstand this cycle. For example, walking boots often have very strong, almost rigid soles that enable us to walk comfortably on very uneven surfaces.
Many people don’t allow for the swelling of their feet throughout the day when shopping for footwear. The main cause is of course gravity. If you spend your working day on your feet you will know how much your feet can swell during the day. As liquid is drawn toward your feet by gravity then your footwear will become increasingly tight and uncomfortable. You can lessen foot swelling by putting the feet up periodically throughout the course of the day.
Obviously, if your shoes are already tight they wil only get tighter and increasingly uncomfortable as the day progresses. Shoes that are too narrow or too short for your feet will be bound to give you pain. Ideally we should all have our feet measured and accurately sized. This raises another point to remember when shopping for shoes: your feet are smaller in the morning so be sure to make an allowance for swelling. As a rule you should ensure that there is about a fingers width of space, inside the shoe, in front of your big toe.
Many people prefer to carry out their clothes and shoe shopping online these days. Not surprisingly this can lead to some problems as you aren’t able to try on the shoes before selecting them and one manufacturer’s size 8 can differ from another. The trick here is to go into a shoe store and try on the style and make of shoes that you want and then find them online at a cheaper price. You may not be very popular with your local shoe stores but at least your shoes will fit.
A pair of shoes that fit properly should never need to be worn in. If they fit properly and they are right for what you want to do in them then they should be comfortable.
It is, of course, important to select the right shoes for the right job. It would be mad to attempt a marathon in a pair of six inch stilettos. I think that simply standing in a pair of six inch stillettos is acually quite mad. But shoes like these have their place. If you spend all day on your feet then choose comfortable shoes that are as flat as possible with generous space in front of your big toe and ideally laces that can be loosened as your feet swell.
A form of footwear that has become ubiquitous in recent years is, of course, trainers and skate shoes. There are a great variety of sports shoes in a variety of style, some designed for specific applications like jogging on concrete surfaces. Vans shoes and DC shoes are two notable brands with an excellent reputation for robustness, comfort and long life. I love trainers of all descriptions and will probably be wearing a pair of Vans or Nike training shoes when I finally meet my maker. There is a great variety of fantastic styles and colors available today that you should be able to find some that not only fit comfortably but look great with whatever you want to wear and for whatever you want to do.
